Windermere

windermere2Windermere is a small town in Orange County, Florida.  The town is located 14 miles from Orlando and is in the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area.  When the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population in 2006 Windermere had 2,019 residents.  The size of Windermere is small at 1.1 square miles but this town has plenty to offer and lots nearby.

Windermere is not as old as other cities nearby but still has a rich history.  The town was created in 1889 and the name Windermere means “Among the lakes” because it is located at the isthmus between several of the lakes in the Lake Butler chain of lakes.  The city prides itself in keeping the character of a small town and still has many dirt roads for smaller roads.  The city has also reduced the number of pass through traffic by adding three roundabouts.  This regulates the congestion and keeps traffic flowing.  The town has been rated in the top few places in Florida for families with children to live by NeighborhoodScout and is currently rated as number one.  Many celebrities call Windermere home including Tiger Woods who has lived here since 1997.

The attraction to live in such a small town that draws many celebrities, athletes, and executives is the package of having a small town charm and solitude, highly rated schools for your children, easy access to the Butler Chain of Lakes, airport and the major Orlando attractions just minutes away.  Everything is close by but you are able to enjoy the tranquility Windermere offers.

There are no colleges or universities in Windermere itself but many are close by including:

  • Valencia Community College
  • Rollins Collegelake butler
  • University of Phoenix – Orlando Campus
  • University of Central Florida
  • Seminole Community College
  • Polk Community College
  • Stetson University
  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
  • Keller Graduate School of Business
  • Florida Institute of Technology

Being on the isthmus of the Butler Chain of Lakes provides residents many opportunities to enjoy these great sandy bottom lakes.  Residents are able to walk on the wooded shore lines and witness magnificent sunrises and sunsets.  Many residents find themselves enjoying the parks and lakes by going on a boat water skiing, tubing, fishing, or any of the other ways to enjoy the water they live right next to.

Windermere offers plenty for being such a small town.  The upscale shopping and dining available along with amazing golf and plenty of water access makes this town appealing to everyone in the area.  Being rated the best place to have a family with children just shows this town offers up so much for such a small place.  The small town atmosphere is alive and well in Windermere and the benefits of Orlando so close give residents everything they can desire.
